Once upon a time, there was a teacher who started her career with a brand-new box of crayons, markers with ink, and sharpened color pencils. She quickly became a middle school teacher who needed to wear a tiara to remind students who was in charge! Fast forward a couple of decades and this Teacher/Queen/Gardener Extraordinaire figured out that the best way to teach was to ask her students how she could help them learn. Pull up a cushion or sit in your assigned seat while learning how she shapes her teaching from discussions with students about learning. Jen will tell you how she helps her students bloom from their higher education readiness levels with; 1) bridging the asynchronous divide, 2) being ever present with face time (or Facetime), 3) using digital components to your advantage, and 4) mentoring students across the wireless cyberworld.

In a globalized community with endless information, we continually individualize our goals in tandem with our surrounding environment.  We are consumers of a great deal of knowledge throughout our life time.  Many times throughout this feast, we separate knowledge into passion and learning.  What do we do with all the risks, criticisms, idealistic passions, experimentation, and creativity?  Our self-development and learning experiences begin from our inspiration and our passion for what we do does not end once we attain our degree.  The most important thing is how we measure success for ourselves through a life-long journey of learning.

Jen Robinson, Ph.D.

Program Chair - Assistant Professor, Ashford University

Jen Robinson began planting the seeds of knowledge in the 1990s and spent 20 years as a K-12 and university ESL teacher. She has taught in Washington, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Along the way, she has learned a great deal about how to help students using their feedback regarding the teaching and learning process. Students as young as five and as old as, well, older than Jen, have helped her understand the teaching and learning process. The teacher education classes were fantastic (as were her professors), but she has learned that the true authority over learning are those who are learning. She now surveys her students about what helps them succeed in her classes. Yes, her witty and charming personality is grand, but the actions of teaching and learning have been impacted greatly by seeking real-time feedback from her students.
